In a rare and compelling find, a film clip of Dr. Wernher von Braun was discovered in a library dumpster in Trenton, New Jersey, in 1982. Approved by NASA in 1961, this film reveals a side of von Braun few have seen. It showcases his reflections on how science transformed his worldview. This may be the first public viewing in decades.
Von Braun’s Reflections on Ethics and Atomic Energy
Von Braun argues that atomic energy demands a solid ethical foundation. Without it, the consequences could be catastrophic, leading to death and destruction.
He identifies two forces that shape ethical behavior:
Belief in God and Mortality: A belief in God instills a sense of accountability for our actions in the afterlife.
Belief in No God: Without belief in a higher power, people may see themselves as the ultimate authority.
In his view, scientifically, nothing can disappear without a trace. This principle extends metaphorically to the repercussions of our ethical choices.
The Decline of Ethical Standards
Today’s ethics are often determined by those with the most power and money, leading to a dangerous moral landscape. The erosion of ethics leads to modern-day genocide.
If I can find the full video clip, I’ll share it.
