Deepfakes, a product of artificial intelligence, have emerged as a formidable tool for creating deceptive media content. It portrays individuals saying or doing things they never did. In response to this threat, DARPA developed semantic algorithms to counter large-scale disinformation campaigns where deepfakes often play a pivotal role.
While the initial demonstration of SemaFor's capabilities serves as a benchmark, it's crucial to understand the rapid development of deepfake technology. Today, the authenticity of online audio and video content is dangerous, as it demands a heightened sense of awareness from both consumers and authorities.
This technology far exceeds what was showcased in the initial demonstration. From political propaganda to social engineering, the potential for malicious artificial media is limitless. This reality highlights the need for individuals to evaluate all information encountered online, especially in this age of skepticism. Everyone must approach all content viewed with a discerning eye. The accuracy of any audio or video media now blurs between fact and fiction.
Moreover, it’s essential to recognize the broader context of governmental influence on media and the use of disinformation. The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), enacted under the administration of former President Barack Obama, legalized the use of propaganda on US citizens by their government. This move, coupled with the nullification of the Smith-Mundt Act of 1948, grants the federal government and military free rein to spread propaganda at will. It has enabled the State Department and Pentagon to utilize mainstream media and “directly disseminate campaigns of misinformation to the U.S. public.”
Given these facts, legitimate concerns about DARPA's SemaFor program could be used as a propaganda wing of the government, further eroding trust in media and deepening societal divisions.
Therefore, it’s up to the people to unite and cease the divide across the nation. If not, then the people only have themselves to blame. Because, at the end of the day, we only have each other. Our elected officials will only bring each of us into an early grave. That, is, if we allow it.
